THANK YOU! Your emails helped Senators Richard Durbin and Thad Cochran remove the language in the National Defense Authorization Act that was threatening to eliminate the Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) at the Department of Defense! Their amendment, #4369 to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017, S. 2943, passed by a vote of 66 to 32 ensuring that the OCRP stays at the Department of Defense. OCRP was funded at $20 million in fiscal year 2016 and we are still eagerly working to ensure that we receive $20 million of funding for fiscal year 2017 as well.
Also, last Tuesday, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor/HHS/Education approved bipartisan legislation for Departments and Agencies under its jurisdiction. The legislation provides $34 billion for the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2017, an increase of $2 billion above fiscal year 2016. The recommended 2017 funding level for the National Cancer Institute is $5.34 billion, an increase of $216 million over fiscal year 2016.
Thank you for your continued advocacy efforts to make ovarian cancer a top funding and awareness priority!
